Natatorium / Pool Applications
There are several schools of thought when it comes to designing Natatorium or Pool applications. In the ASHRAE Journal (July 2017 edition) the “Ventilation Requirements for Natatoriums” article highlights an alternate method for calculating ventilation rates. This method aligns with the design approach that XeteX follows for these types of applications. The XeteX design dehumidifies indoor pool and waterpark spaces using large amounts of outdoor air. This approach delivers greater swimmer and spectator comfort, improves air quality and minimizes corrosion by removing greater amounts of chloramines from the space. The use of outdoor air as the primary form of dehumidification also dramatically reduces the annual hours where mechanical dehumidification is required, lowering the operating costs of the facility.
This month our highlighted unit shows some of the design considerations we take when designing units for natatorium applications. Due to the climate design conditions (Colorado) and how the unit was designed, it did not require mechanical cooling. The unit features XeteX’s aluminum flat plate heat exchanger with an epoxy coating to protect the exchanger from the corrosive air properties of the natatorium environment. All the components on the interior of the unit were built with aluminum to decrease unit corrosion.
Other unit highlights include:
- 2” double wall thermal break casing with foam injected insulation
- Aluminum Interior with aluminum tread floors
- Epoxy coated flat plate heat exchanger
- Full factory unit controls with a BACnet MS/TP interface
- Heat exchanger face and bypass dampers
- Aluminum blower wheels with heresite coated motor bases
- Aluminum mesh return air filter
- Outdoor airflow monitoring damper
- SA and EA airflow monitoring
