More InfoToday’s HVAC systems, with lower mass, higher efficiencies and advanced electronic controls, are very different from traditional designs. To fully capture the increased efficiency and address the design challenges associated with it, the system components must also change. Buffer tanks are an integral part of a system, as they add the required fluid volume to prevent boilers and chillers from 'short-cycling'. Hydraulic separators allow the designer to fully capture the energy reduction potential in an all-variable hydronic heating system, while minimizing the required footprint and the risk of field errors. This webinar will explain the uses and sizing parameters for both buffer tanks and hydraulic separators in hot-water or chilled-water systems. Join us Tuesday, August 9th for a fascinating look into these HVAC components. PDH certificates will be sent to all attendees.

More InfoThere are a variety of ways to mitigate harmonics caused by variable frequency drives (VFDs). After a quick overview on harmonics, IEEE 519, and an assortment of mitigation techniques, this webinar focuses on comparing an Active Front End (AFE) drive to an Active Filter (AF) strategy. AFE drives are considered a decentralized mitigation strategy and the harmonics are taken care of at the VFD. In HVAC applications, active filters are most often applied in a centralized mitigation strategy and the harmonics are taken care of at one point in the system. Both strategies have their own unique advantages. After attending this webinar an engineer will have a better understanding of when to apply which strategy. Presenter: Tim Skell, ABB HVAC Sales Application Engineer Manager

More InfoWhen mechanical systems sit idle for extended periods, uncoated iron components exposed to water will naturally oxidize. The formation of rust between the impeller and the casing of a pump can cause the impeller to stick or seize. Cathodic electrodeposition (CED) coating, or E-coating, prevents the formation of rust in a pump, which in turn avoids the issue of seizing and prevents damage during start-up. Armstrong has recently published a whitepaper on the subject. In this webinar we will discuss the potential for oxidization, the harm it can do to surfaces within the pump and the eventual effect on the performance and efficiency of the HVAC system. We will also look at the process for CED coating and how it, along with services for Active Performance Management, preserves and protects system performance. This session will be of interest to contractors, operators, system designers, maintenance personnel and owners. 1 PDH Credit available.

More InfoThis webinar will take a deep dive into how you can manage the indoor environment of schools to protect students and staff from respiratory viruses and other infectious microbes. Keeping schools healthy will minimize the spread of infections which will result in reduced absenteeism and improve focus for a more productive school day. Schools, like most buildings were originally constructed as shelters to protect occupants from extreme outdoor conditions and other natural threats. In the last several decades, however, the relentless pursuit of energy and operating efficiency, in addition to the use of synthetic building materials, have created buildings that often do the opposite: contribute to the spread of infectious diseases and other occupant illnesses. The insights gained from the Covid-19 pandemic have shown just how much we depend on properly managed buildings for almost all aspects of our lives! Respiratory infections cause huge productivity losses and generate considerable healthcare expenses that must be borne both by businesses and society at large. The catastrophic consequences for the economy have been vividly demonstrated by the coronavirus lockdowns. Flu infections alone are responsible for more than 500 million cases worldwide every year. In this alarming time, we are excited to inform you about clear and actionable steps you can take to protect schools from viral spread indoors. Join us for this webinar to learn how to maintain a healthier school to reduce the spread of infectious disease and to keep students and teachers safe.

More InfoLong-term care facilities, like most buildings, were originally constructed to protect occupants from extreme climactic conditions and other outdoor threats. In the last several decades the focus on buildings as shelters has unfortunately been overshadowed by design, construction and operating practices that show clear and immediate profitability. The availability of inexpensive synthetic building materials and emphasis on energy-efficiency have unwittingly created indoor environments that often increase the spread of infectious diseases and other occupant illnesses. Until recently, common practices in mechanical system design, operation, choice of building materials and disinfection protocols were largely unchallenged. The Covid–19 pandemic has changed this! Supporting the health, in fact the very survival, of occupants in long-term care facilities must be accomplished by following evidence-based guidelines known to decrease the indoor spread of disease. Clearly, respiratory infections cause huge productivity losses and generate enormous healthcare expenses that must be borne both by businesses and society at large. The catastrophic consequences for the economy have been vividly demonstrated by the coronavirus lockdowns. Flu infections alone are responsible for more than 500 million cases worldwide every year. In this pivotal time when we once again turn to buildings for shelter, we are excited to reveal to you actionable steps, backed by medical and building science research, that you can take to manage your indoor environment to truly protect the occupants and staff of long-term care facilities from viral respiratory disease.
